The live map and GPS tracking

Where the positions come from, what the map shows, and what to check when it looks empty.

What the map shows

Live Map plots every vehicle currently on duty, with its driver, speed and last-seen time.

Where positions come from

The driver app. A driver who is on duty reports position in the background. There is no separate hardware required to get started.

If you use dedicated GPS trackers, those can feed the same map; a vehicle with a tracker reports whether or not the driver app is running.

When the map looks empty

Work through these in order:

  1. Is anyone on duty? Off-duty drivers are deliberately not tracked. Check the on-duty board.
  2. Does the driver app have location permission? On Android it must be allowed "all the time", not "while using the app", or reporting stops the moment the phone is locked.
  3. Battery optimisation. Many Android phones suspend background apps aggressively; exclude the driver app.
  4. Signal. Positions queue on the phone with no coverage and upload when it returns, so a gap in a route usually fills in later.

Route history

Each trip keeps the route actually driven, shown on the trip's detail page — useful for disputes about distance or time.
